Christine Payne-Towler – Book Recommendations Part 2

I am happily ensconced on Christine Payne Towler’s site, http://www.tarotarkletters.com/arkletter_essays_and_articles/index.html. I could stay there for hours, looking at her book and deck recommendations, reading (and many times rereading) articles, essays and Arkletters. Today I want to bring Christine’s own book into the spotlight, as well as two other highly valuable reference books. I love building a personal library, and it helps to get recommendations from someone of Christine’s caliber.

The first book that caught my eye was Carl Jung’s “Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle”. This is an extract from Volume 8, a parapsychological study of the meaningful coincidence of events, extrasensory perception, and similar phenomenon. While not directly related to Tarot, it certainly has an application in how the Tarot is perceived by the reader as well as the Seeker. Not bad reading if you want to take Tarot to a deeper level.

The next book that caught my eye was Caitlin Matthews’ “Sophia: Goddess of Wisdom: The Divine Feminine From Black Goddess To World Soul”. Here the journey moves from pre-Christian spirituality to present day, seeking out the presence of the Goddess, the divine feminine power of wisdom. Throughout history, the Goddess and Goddess wisdom has been shunted aside – buried, if you will. In current times, focus is returning to the divine feminine in all of us.As readers, we use the Tarot as a tool of empowerment in readings, ritual, visualization and journey work. It is there to help us access our feminine wisdom and put it to work in our lives.

The third book, and one that I highly recommend, is Christine Payne-Towler’s “The Underground Stream: Esoteric Tarot Revealed”. This book makes you think, an I am quite enamored of it. Even if you don’t agree with everything Christine has to say, it makes you think about why things are the way they are in the Tarot world, and the world of esotericism. She discusses ancient knowledge, evolving magical traditions, weaving them together to illuminate the blind spots that hold us back from understanding the origins of the Tarot. She combines ancient astrology, Hebrew Kaballah, Alexandrian Hermeticism, Renaissance Magism and a history of the European Secret Societies to show the esoteric structure at the foundation of Tarot. Blatant self-promotion – my review can be seen here – http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/books/underground-stream/.

St George’s Day Spread

This spread was gifted to us by Alison Cross this am via Face Book (great place to have coffee and chat!). I used the Gaian Tarot – one of my favorite decks.

St George’s Day Spread
From Alison Cross

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Maiden – this card represents your goal – Four of Air (Swords)
St George – this card represents YOU in relationship to The Maiden – Justice
The Dragon – what holds you back from achieving success – The Teacher (Hierophant)
The Sword – the energies of this card will help drive you forwards – Eight of Earth (Pentacles)
The Shield – the energies of this card indicates something you would do well to protect against – Guardian of Earth (Queen of Pentacles)
Final Card – The Magician

Your final card in the spread represents what might happen if you CAN slay the dragon using the Sword and Shield info and obtain The Maiden. The likely outcome card.

My goal is to create sacred space, and that is very true. I am in the midst of major changes, and I need to be able to hold my space to give these changes “room to operate”.

In relation to my goal, I am being a very demanding little person! I am standing there going “Universe, it is time for this to happen!” I have put in the work, now I want to see the results!

What is holding me back from accomplishing my goals is my Cappie nature, IMHO. Outmoded structures/beliefs need to be acknowledged, loved and then released.

What I need to protect myself against IS myself. Guardian of Earth (Queen of Pentacles). I need to be less conservative – especially in the financial sector.

If I can slay the dragon … the world is mine, and I can manifest the life that I wish!

Back In time, With Christine Payne-Towler

I love a good blog,  and one of my favorite Tarot people – Christine Payne-Towler – has a blog that I truly admire. On Tarot University Arkletters she gifts us with an absolute ton of in-depth information, which is nicely defined, and easily accessible. Not too long ago Christine was doing what she called a “World Servers Spread”. I thought that it would be interesting to go back to April of 2010 and see what Christine had to say.

<Que “Star Wars” music>

April, 2010: Christine is musing about how the events of the past few months have been making a difference to her focus and goals for the year 2010. Her partner Michael is going great guns on his WIP – the new, Continental style deck that will accompany her WIP – a book on the Continental Tarot. Stunning synchronicity on how their differing talents come together in a major project like this!

She talks about pattern recognition, and “wearing the hats” of the various archetypes to bring her work together. I love the thought that she expresses about studying the Mysteries from “within” the Mysteries, as opposed to being on the outside looking in. She also talks about why Tarot became the epicenter of her focus. I think this section of the article alone is worth its weight in gold! How many of us work within multiple modalities, and find ourselves having to defend this practice. A look into Christine’s life helps to give clear focus to our own lives.

Another really cool section is on how esoteric values “gravitated” onto the cards. You would swear that you were sitting at the kitchen table having coffee and conversation when you read this article! Bits and pieces of things t hat you have read in books, or heard expressed in online forums, suddenly begin to come together and make a very clear picture.

I hope that I have given you enough information here to pique your interest, and head you over to Christine’s blog! Enjoy!

Are You A Master Gardener?

Are you a master gardener? Do you look at your life as a garden, and take the time to seed it, to nurture it, to weed it, and then to sit back and enjoy the results? If not, then you may want to spend some time with Master Gardener Jordan Hoggard’s incredible new blog! Jordan is the author and artist for the “Mystereum Tarot” (lovingly self-published), and “Tarot In The Land Of Mystereum”, the updated version recently released from Schiffer Books. (Blatant self promotion – my review of “Tarot In The Land Of Mystereum” can be seen here – http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/land-mystereum/review.shtml. My 2008 interview with Jordan can be seen here – http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/learn/interview_jordan_hoggard.shtml.)

This is a deck that is meant to be worked with on all levels, not just used for readings (or the occasional journey, ritual or ceremony – which it does well, with its bright colors!). To this end, Jordan has begun a new blog, which can be seen here: JordanHoggard.wordpress.com. Anyone who knows Jordan, or has seen any amount of his work, knows they are in for a treat! (Note: I would love to see Jordan and Craig Conley take on a project together!)

Here are a few links to get you started:
Ones: Birth-Placing Identity
Three’s: Birth-Placing Clarity
Fives: Birth-Placing Identity
Eights: Birth-Placing Identity

Mystereum Comparative Tarot: Nine of Pentacles

Mary Greer Does It Again!

What an absolute pleasure to read Mary Greer’s post this morning – “A Truly Notable Tarot Reading”. Where to begin? This is just an awesome blog post, and everybody needs to read it! The issue that Mary is addressing is how to record information from a reading in a fashion that the Seeker can take with them an actually use. This is extremely important … as Mary points out, it is all to easy to forget what has been said in a reading because so much information is presented in such a short time. She also makes the very important point that the Seeker (our client) has offered their time and money for their reading, and that their really should be a way that they can take this information with them.

In the, shall we say “less techie” days, a tape of the reading would suffice. In those days this actually was true added value. I made the effort to make tapes for my clients because readers that I had gone to had taken time (and made the effort) to do the same for me. I have a friend who currently makes CD’s of her readings, and sends them to her clients (she does a lot of over the phone reading). This is a skill that I have promised myself that I will learn. (At present, I am caught up in getting Skype to recognie my laptop’s audio card!)

Mary has taken a giant leap forward into, as she indicates in her blog, a very FaNcy method of digital recording. She is now using an iPad 2 to record her Tarot consultations – and is doing so in a VERY BIG WAY! My chat ends here – you needto read Mary’s own words to see what a marvelous tool this is! Her article can be seen here – http://marygreer.wordpress.com/2011/04/16/a-truly-notable-tarot-reading/.

Full Moon In Libra

Sunday, April 17th, gives us a Full Moon in the sign of Libra. Whatever was seeded (began) during the previous Aries New Moon (and with that Aries energy, I cannot possibly be the only person who put some serious intent out there!) is now coming to completion. In the sign of Libra, relationships come into focus – relationships with others, as well as out relationship with ourselves. (Note: For some really great insight on relationship with self, see Jordan Hoggard’s blog at http://jordanhoggard.wordpress.com.) Other points of focus are that which we hold important (materially and spiritually), and our personal belief system.

The scales of Libra at this time are weighting our personal identities, and the identity of each relationship as a whole. For instance, in a romantic partnership there are three distinct identities – that of each of the partners as individuals, and that of the partners as a whole. What we are also looking at is becoming more aware and gaining insight into our individual process. We are also looking at our emotional selves being out of balance. The Sun in Aries and the Moon in Libra indicate that we need to bring about harmony and balance in an equitable fashion.

Remember that when we talk about restoring balance to relationship, we are talking about balance with outer relationships (relationships with others) and out inner relationship with ourselves. If we are not walking our talk, we are out of balance with ourselves.

Some things that we might want to look at during a Libra Full Moon are:

1. Where are my needs not being met?
2. What is the conflict “really” about?
3. What does not seem fair?
4. What is my part of the conflict?
5. How can peaceful resolution be brought about?
6. How can all parties be respected and honored?
7. What do I need to take responsibility for?
8. How can I best empower myself?
9. What wisdom do I take away from this situation?
10. How can I balance my need for independence with my need to be responsible?

Who’s Who At The Readers Studio Part 4

Thank you to each of you that have shared your personal information with us! The Readers Studio is a wonderful event, filled with people and things to do. It gives us a marvelous “heads up” to know what our fellow Tarotists are interested in and/or working on. This is the final segment on submissions. Many thanks to Paul Nagy and Courtney Weber for sharing their information!

Paul Nagy has been attending Reader’s Studio’s regularity since 2007. I have been reading tarot for more than 40 years, though formally (I studied) only since 1978. I am a mystic and esotericist. The proper term is theosophist, a sort of philosophical mystic. This means I believe the purpose of life is to know oneself as God knows and the “esoteric”, means that our simple awareness is the proof and entry to divine presence.

I bring my theosophical learning to pushing the envelope in Tarot studies. Some of my on-going projects can be found atwww.tarothermeneutics.com

Currently I facilitate a free Tuesday evening teleconference about Jodorowsky’s Way of the Tarot, a general study of the Marseille tradition. The sessions are collegial and conversational and open to drop-ins.

At RS you’ll know me as I tend to take many photos during the event. In this photo from RS09 Mary Greer is taking my picture as I take hers.

Courtney Weber is a Priestess, writer, Tarot Advisor, performer and activist originally from Portland, OR. She received ordination as a Priestess of Pan from Rev. Cyn DeFay of the Cluan-Feart Mystery School in 2005 and a Third Degree Initiation as a Priestess of Brid from Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone in 2009. She is the HPS of Novices of the Old Ways, a Progressive Wiccan and Pagan group based in New York City and Portland, Oregon. Courtney is a Masters of Divinity Candidate at Union Theological Seminary. She is the producer and designer of “Tarot of the Boroughs,” a contemporary, Urban Tarot deck set in New York City with photography by George Courtney.

Since beginning the study of Tarot at the age of 15, Courtney has gained a national clientel base and is a highly popular Tarot consultant at corporate, community and underground arts events in the Northeast Region including Harvest Gathering, Pagan Odyssey, New York Pagan Pride Day, the Tahuti Lodge of New York City, the Pagan Center of New York, Brid’s Closet and Delmarva Pagan Pride. For two years, Courtney wrote (under the pen-name of Sister Mary Manhattan) the weekly cult-favorite astrologyexplained.blogspot.com and astrology columns on Oomph.net and Bakespace.com. Courtney has been a recurring guest on Beyond the Worlds Tarot podcast and featured on Second Sight Paranormal podcast as a consultant on Witchcraft. As a Progressive Wiccan, her practice focuses heavily on trance possession, social justice, the evolution of American Witchcraft and ministerial training for Wiccans and Pagans. Christine Payne-Towler New Moon Tarotlogy January 2011

Some of you out there HAVE to be rolling your eyes and thinking to yourselves “Ummmm Bonnie … This is April, not January! You did, however, get the year right. All is not lost.” You are paying attention! Good! We are entering the second quarter of 2011 … what I see in my life, and the life of my clients, is that major changes are happening, and life is moving faster and faster. We have to know what we want to leave behind, what we want to bring in, and what the environment that we are doing all of this in has to offer. This is why I am reintroducing the link to Christine Payne-Towlers January New Moon 2011 article.

Christine talks about January’s partial solar eclipse in Capricorn, and other astrological positions. She uses the Continental model as a reference for her work, which in these articles is to provide commentary from the Tarot on current astrological positions. Here is Christine’s summation – I hope that it encourages you to read the entire article!

“SUMMATION

As a whole, this group of cards seems to be quite coherent, in the sense that all signs point to exercising the instinctive native genius instead of repeating pre-programmed reflexes entrained through acculturation. The Venus card suggests that you let yourself steer away from things that feel malevolent to you. The Jupiter card reminds that there is no need to hurry; natural momentum is your ally at the moment. The Mercury card assures that we each have everything we need to go forward with confidence.  The Saturn card suggests that we lend aid to those who find themselves falling short in these difficult times.  Finally, the Mars card implies that its time to engage the community in a problem-solving expedition that can backstop tried-and-true approaches with fresh viewpoints and new tools.  In composite, it seems that this Capricorn NewMoon is offering us a chance to come to a new focus, defend our boundaries, go with what’s working but also be quick to change when better ideas come along. This is perfect advice for the New Year, so I’ll leave it here in trust that my readers know just where these ideas are meant to be applied.”

The article can be seen here -http://www.tarotarkletters.com/2011/01/newmoon-tarotlogy-january-2011.html. Touching base with this article will help you clarify where you are, where you are going, and what you will be facing inhte coming year.

Tarot Birth Cards – Death/Emperor

Over the next year I am going to be writing about Tarot Birth Cards, what they mean and how we can work with them. I use the system of Tarot Birth Cards developed by Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone of the Tarot School (www.tarotschool.com). Using the Seeker’s birth data (month, day and year), pairs of birth cards are defined. (For more information, and to calculate your own Birth Cards, go tohttp://tarotschool.com/Calculator.html.)

Please note: I have a book being published by Schiffer Books in fall of 2011 –  “Keys To Empowerment”, incorporating images from Karyn’s Easton’s “Tarot Lovers Tarot”. This was to have been a joint project (book and deck published together), but the decision was made to publish both separately, which I find very exciting! Karyn has a Birth Card calculator up on her site, where you can also view her incredible deck (it really is!) –http://paranormality.com/tarot-birth-card-calculator.shtml.

A special thanks to Leisa ReFalo www.tarotconnection.net, who developed the Birth Card Calculator, and graciously gave us permission to use it.

Our fourth pair of Birth Cards are the Death (Key 13) and the Emperor (Key 4). Some of the associations for these cards are:

Death
Astrological Sign: Scorpio
Keywords: Release, change, living in the past, stuck in old patterns, blocks, transformation, renewal, detachment.

The Emperor
Astrological Sign: Aries
Keywords:  Decisive, ability to observe, logical thinking, organization, determination, male energy (animus), leadership, ambition, seeking stability, protecting others, dominion over mind, emotions, body.

The Theme for this lifetime is:  Learning to detach from the physical world, and release all expectations. The ability to take a leadership position, and own ones power.

We can choose to do personal work with our own Birth Cards, we can use Birth Cards in conjunction with a reading for a client (place their birth cards, drawn from a deck other than the one you are reading with, above the spread(s) laid out for them). The spread(s) are then read through the lens of perception of the Seeker’s Birth Cards. As added value, a reader could give their client scans of their Birth Cards, along with a short write-up about them. Readers can also use the Birth Card system to better understand other people in their own lives (family, co-workers, friends etc.).

The key to bringing balance to any lifetime is that of understanding how and where your Birth Cards are operating in your life. Death, ruled by Scorpio, places the focus on releasing that which no longer serves us well. This could be releasing people, places, things, or even an attitude, or way of looking at something, from our life.

The Emperor, ruled by Aries places focus on an independent optimistic, generous nature. There is also a sense of calculated risk taking here, as well as the ability to get things done. (The fact that the Emperor archetype has a magnetic personality does not hurt!).  There is often a sense of excitement and adventure surrounding the Emperor archetype, thanks to his Aries ruler.

Death and the Emperor set the tone for this lifetime. The path that the individual walks is one that addresses the lessons of balance in life – Death releases, to make room for future growth, while the Emperor brings order to what already exists. Death stands in the background, clearing things away, while the Emperor takes a position of leadership, making and implementing decisions.

A 13/4 (Death/Emperor) individual empowers themselves by releasing self-imposed holds from the past, that which is blocking them, holding them back, or not serving them well. They give up the ask that they gave been showing in public so that they can be who they really are. It is facing our fears and releasing them, giving up old habits and old ways of thinking of things. This is also a lifetime of accepting leadership roles, of using their power in an efficient manner to bring order out of chaos, and to make effective decisions.  What needs to be watched for here is a tendency to be judgmental and over analytical.

We are what we tell ourselves we are. When we understand why we make the decisions that we do, we can look at the decisions that are not bringing us happiness, and rethink them. If our decisions are not taking us where we want to go, we have a disconnect in our life. A 13/4 lifetime is all about releasing the past and taking accountability for the present and future.

Death and the Emperor act together to form the foundation for an authentic life. Death demands that we release that which no longer serves us well. He asks us to disconnect from the past, and from repetitive old patterns of thinking and acting. He asks us to recognize and release the blocks in our life – to move past them. When Death enters out life, we may change jobs, change career fields, move to a new home, or a new state, release a friendship, leave a long-term relationship or marriage, or make some other type of transition. Death is all about the unknown, and brings out all the fears that we have hiding within us. With Death, we are moving past and releasing these fears, so that they no longer have a hold over us.

The Emperor is all about creating structure out of chaos. He is intimately concerned with the details of life (where Death demands that we release attachment to the details of life). He is the animus, or the male influence in life. He is self-confident, powerful, and is not afraid to take calculated risks. His thinking is organized and logical, and he takes action only after he has thought things through. He is good at problem solving, and implementing solutions.

Birth-Placing Identity

One of my favorite Tarot people – Jordan HIggard (“Tarot of the Mystereum”. “Tarot In the Land Of  The Mystereum”) has  a new blog up -http://jordanhoggard.wordpress.com/. I am incredibly impressed with a series that he is currently running entitled “Birth-Placing Identity”. Essentially these are birth cards, using the dual birth card system. In this system, the Fool stands apart, and the birth cards are developed as the higher and lower vibration for the numbers one through nine.

Currently the following numbers up:

Number One: Sun/Wheel/Magician http://jordanhoggard.wordpress.com/2011/04/07/ones-birth-placing-clarity/
Number Three: World/Hanged Man/Empress http://jordanhoggard.wordpress.com/2011/04/07/tarot-birth-card-identities-the-threes/
Number Five: Temperance/Hierophant http://jordanhoggard.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/fives-birth-placing-identity/
Number Seven: Tower/Chariot http://jordanhoggard.wordpress.com/

Anyone who has ever met Jordan, or read any of his work, knows that they have a very special time in store with these blogs! I am going to quote from the blog because Jordan explains this much better than I ever could!

Welcome to my Tarot Birth Card Identity Blog! This blog is intended to be a simple overview of Tarot Birth Cards, a casual and concise walk-through of the groupings of Birth Cards to express some of the ways that they can contribute vital components to identity. Also, I will layer in Birth Card Preludes to express the whole of each Birth Card grouping in a short statement. I find that these Preludes, as I like to call them, are best stated as triggers to remind one how the Birth Cards can integrate an overall expression of a Birth Card combo in a single voice. Enjoy finding your own path with these, and look forward to hearing your own, personal “trigger” Preludes and Birth Card thoughts directly composed from your feeling-sense of them.

Note also how these Birth Card expressions and Preludes factor in to hook up and work with my videos like the Aces Four Potential and Twos To Pair on my website and YouTube channel – check out links below. Enjoy the correspondences of the numbers as they flow back and forth between the Major Arcana in the Birth Cards and each of the suits of the Minor Arcana and Courts in the videos. Also, I encourage you to have some fun and come up with Preludes on your own for the Aces through the Tens, and as well Your Royal Court characters.

Jordan discusses the energy of the cards, adds a link to an incredibly well done video on You Tube, includes scans of the cards (one card on either side of a scan of the card back, which shows lovely “window” symbology”), and shows the reader “how” each birth card combo functions in “real life”.

Definitely a blog to follow! HInt – If you go there, look for the link to Jordan’s discussion of the Death card. There are some true gifts there!
