I have a very interesting book and deck coming my way – the HEXEN 2.0 Tarot by Suzanne Treister. As a preamble to that, on the advice my friend Paul Nagy, I purchased the initial groundwork for this project, the book HEXEN2039, also by Suzanne Treister. Quite frankly, it is going to take me some time to understand the work that this incredible artist is doing. We are not talking “pretty pictures” here, we are talking work that is presented in multi-media format, with a very distinctive foundation. In 1995 Treister created a fictional alter ego by the name of Rosalind Brodsky. Rosalind is just as normal as the rest of us – a delusional time traveler who thinks that she is working at the Institute of Militronics and Advanced Time Interventionality (IMATI) in the twenty-first century.
What exactly is it that Rosalind is studying? The usual … issues of history, global politics, religion, popular culture, sexuality, science, technology, military, and theories of the future. Very cool stuff! We are looking at the development of mind control technology for the British military (think distant viewing), then there are conspiracy theories, connections with occult organizations, Soviet brainwashing and more.
Quite frankly, one has to remind ones-self that this is a work of fiction … a work of art … and not commentary of reality. But we do know that these things exist, so should we question the connections? Well, we shouldn’t accept them without thought, and perhaps all we are meant to do here is to widen our perspectives on life, what it was, is, and can be.
It is going to be interesting to see how this plays out in a Tarot deck! (Yes, I already have the very preconceived notion that this is not a true theme deck (the HEXEN2.0), but theory hung on an available existing structure, At the least, it will be an interesting ride!
